UMM National Gathering July 15-17, Purdue Univ.
District Fall Rally September 8, St Luke UMC, Sanford
Our scholarship program has reached another milestone with the award of seven individual $500 scholarships for the ‘05-‘06 school year. There were a total of 10 applications all of which were eminently qualified and had we adequate resources all would have been selected for an award.
Those chosen are Jonas Burns-Sandhills Circuit, Patrick Dunn- Page Aberdeen, William McKinnor- Page Aberdeen, Adam Sproles- Page Aberdeen, Michael Tatum, St. Luke, Paul Wethington- Southhern Pines and Jonathan Woodham- Asbury. Congratulations to each of them and to the men’s organization at their church who met the qualifications of chartering the UMM organization and contributing toward the district scholarship fund.
Thanks go to the selection committee and to those UMM organizations that participated with contributions to the scholarship fund which included; Asbury, Broadway, Browns Chapel, Ebenezer, Jonesboro, Page- Aberdeen, Saint Luke, Sandhills Circuit and Southern Pines and of course to those who donated at our Spring Rally. Supporting these young men in this fashion is a significant demonstration of the commitment our men’s organization has toward our youth. Praise the Lord!
Coming up on Friday June 17th we will be feeding approximately 120 men in Rocky Point, NC as they build a home for a tornado victim from last fall. This Merci Center coordinated event is the first for this season. If any one is available to help please contact Ted Thomas 910 215 9595.
The Trailer has been used twice in recent months for District fund raising opportunities netting over $500 for our mission efforts. It is available to local churches as well and has been used by the Page – Aberdeen UMM to help raise funds for their upcoming building project.
Purdue University- UMM National Gathering
July 15-17, 2005 is fast approaching and the registrations are lagging far behind expectations. In the Sanford District there are only four men registered and they are from Page- Aberdeen. This very limited response from our district is disappointing but hope springs eternal. It is not too late. Registration can be made online at gcumm.org. There is a bus departing from Raleigh or individual groups may wish to car pool. This event takes place only once every four years and all who attend return with great enthusiasm and rededication to men’s ministry. Won’t you join with us?
Charter Renewal
There are still quite a number of Umm organizations who have not renewed their charters for 2005 as well as many who have no history of a UMM charter. This is an important part of our men’s ministry as the charter fees are used to fund the programs and materials used by our national organization for our benefit. The $65 annual fee is certainly worth every penny when the benefits of membership are examined. If your men’s organization is not chartered please do so. Charter applications may be found on the web at gcumm.org
EMS Membership
Individual membership in EMS is a way for each of us to support the work of the national UMM organization. Now that the UMM is an official ministry of the church we have added responsibility to the church both locally and beyond. Membership dues are the funding source that allows our organization to function. $30 per member is a small price to pay for the support and work this organization does for the men of the church. Individual applications are also available on the web site gcumm.org
New Web Site
The NC Conference UMM has a new web site. Check it out! ncumm.org you may be highlighted
100 Men of Influence (in review)
Following are some of many highlights from Rev. William Green’s presentation at our Spring Rally. Apply this to your men’s organization and watch the Lord at work among your men.
“One man (of influence) made this remark: “I may succeed again in my business and I may go bust again too, but I will never again do anything to jeopardize my relationship with my wife and family, or with my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.”
Far too often we call men only to do a task. We need to learn to call men to: 1) a great challenge; 2) a daring vision; 3) a wild adventure. Men will respond to a manly challenge, vision and adventure. We need to get men to thinking of themselves as leaders. He may be only one person to the world, but he may be the world to one person! Let’s use our influence. Be a leader.
The keys to a good men’s ministry are: 1) start where men are, not where you wished they were; 2) don’t get angry if men don’t respond to your first attempts to reach them; 3) build relationships first; 4) pray for them; 5) believe in them; 6) give them what they want in the context of what they need. Men’s ministry is a process of moving men from isolation to being gathered, from being gathered to experiencing something real, from experiencing something real to being willing to reveal something real about themselves, and from reveling to becoming brothers at heart.
A men’s ministry is more than just who shows up for breakfast. It is about having a ministry to every man in the church through every man in the church. It is in essence nothing less than one man walking with another man to help him know and serve Christ. May God reveal to you the truth of these insights and enable you to employ them within your men’s ministry.
